Summary:
My family and I booked a full day experience with Mason through Forged Guides on Memorial Day, and I cannot recommend this company enough! The best part of working with Forged Guides is that you get exactly what you ask for. Our goal was to learn how to rappel and then practice and practice and practice, so we would be confident in a trip through slot canyons on our own in Zion National Park in a few weeks. We practiced knot tying, went through gear recommendations, and then spent a lot of time on safety – making sure all four of knew exactly what to do, and how to check that everything was hooked up properly. We also worked on strategy – who would go first, who would be last, and as we practiced throughout the day, we realized we needed to make a few changes. We also practiced belaying each other from below (in addition to Mason belaying us from above). And then we had a ton of fun rappelling down two different cliffs – one was about 60ft high and the other was about 80ft. Scary, thrilling, beautiful – the day itself was amazing. Mason has continued to make himself available even after the day was done, to help us as we continue to work through the process of purchasing gear and get ready for our trip.
We had a little bit of time remaining in our day, and our youngest son really wanted to try rock climbing. Mason is a Climbing Merit Badge Counselor for Boy Scouts, and our son was able to complete all of the work needed for the badge. He had so much fun, he’s trying to convince that in addition to rappelling, that we also become a family that rock climbs. And he got his list of what additional items we need to purchase for that as well from Mason 😊. We had so much fun, learned what we think we need to know, and we continue to feel supported as we prepare for our own adventure in Zion.
